The Medicinal Properties and Historical Records of Suiguzi: Debunking the Myth of Abortion

February 2, 2024

Suiguzi, also known as Danshuye, is the rhizome and tuber of the grass family plant Danshuye, which is mainly produced in the Yangtze River basin of China. It is a medicine for clearing heat and purging fire. It can be used for fever, thirst, dysuria, and mouth ulcers.

Is it true that Suiguzi can cause abortion?

Suiguzi itself is a cold medicine, and there are indeed records in ancient Chinese medical books that it has the effect of causing abortion and inducing childbirth. Therefore, in ancient times, Suiguzi was one of the drugs forbidden for pregnant women.

However, since the introduction of Western medicine into China, it has long lost its role as an abortion drug.

The abortion drugs commonly used in clinical practice are Western medicines, which have undergone mature drug trials. The ingredients, dosage, and efficacy are all clear and safe and effective for patients. And they are all administered in hospitals.

The commonly used drugs in hospitals are Mifepristone (Ru 486) and prostaglandins. The former causes endometrial degeneration and necrosis and cervical softening, while the latter causes uterine contraction to facilitate embryo expulsion.

Historical records of Suiguzi

It is said that after Liu Bei took Hanzhong, he sent Zhang Fei as the vanguard to continue the northern campaign. Zhang Fei's army marched all the way to Baxi City and encountered Zhang He, a general under Cao Cao. Zhang He built a stronghold to resist the enemy. Zhang Fei couldn't capture it, and became extremely anxious. No matter how the soldiers cursed the enemy, Zhang He remained steadfast and refused to come out, which made Zhang Fei furious. As a result, he developed mouth ulcers and the soldiers also suffered from fever and thirst due to cursing the enemy.

When Zhuge Liang heard about this, he sent someone to bring 50 barrels of fine wine. Zhang Fei took the wine to the front line and ordered the soldiers to sit on the ground and drink. When Zhang He saw this, he cursed, "Zhang Fei is deceiving me too much!" He ordered an attack on the enemy's stronghold that night, but unexpectedly, Zhang Fei's soldiers showed no sign of being drunk and fell into an ambush, suffering a big defeat.

It turned out that the wine Zhang Fei's army drank was not wine at all, but water infused with Suiguzi, which not only did not make them drunk, but also relieved their heat and treated their illnesses.
