Sugar mustard is an annual or biennial herb, 30-60cm tall. It is densely covered with appressed bifurcate hairs. The stem is erect, unbranched in the lower part, and angular.
Leaves are opposite; petiole is 1.5-2cm long; blade is elliptic or lanceolate, basal leaves are 5-15cm long and 5-20mm wide, with an acute apex, gradually narrowing at the base, entire margins, and bifurcate hairs on both sides;
Upper leaves are shortly stalked or stalkless, base near the stem, with wavy teeth or nearly entire margins. Inflorescences are terminal, with numerous flowers; sepals are elliptic, 5-7mm long, densely covered with bifurcate hairs, with white membranous margins;
Petals are yellow, inverted lanceolate, 10-14mm long, with fine veins, rounded apex, and long claw at the base; stamens are 6, nearly equal in length; pistil is 1, ovary has numerous ovules, and the stigma is two-cleft.
Siliques are linear, 4-8cm long, with 4 angles and 3-4 bifurcate hairs on the angles. Seeds are arranged in one row per chamber, elongated and flattened, deep reddish-brown. Flowering period is from June to August, and fruiting period is from July to September.
