January 30, 2024

Mulberry Root Bark, also known as Sangbaipi, Sang Root Bark, Mulberry Bark, and White Mulberry Bark, has the functions of clearing the lungs and relieving asthma, promoting diuresis and reducing edema. It is used to treat lung heat asthma and cough, hemoptysis, edema, beriberi, and urinary difficulties. This article will introduce the pharmacological effects of Mulberry Root Bark and provide Mulberry Root Bark images!

  ① Diuretic Effects

When administered orally to rabbits at a dosage of 2g/kg, Mulberry Root Bark decoction significantly increases urine output and chloride levels within 6 hours, returning to normal within 7-24 hours.

  ② Hypotensive Effects

Japanese researchers reported that oral administration of Mulberry Bark decoction to animals has a mild and slow hypotensive effect, and that only the bark of the root or branches has hypotensive effects, while the root and young leaves do not. Injection of 1g/kg (raw herb) subcutaneously with ether, hot water, or warm methanol extract of Mulberry Root Bark can cause a decrease in blood pressure of 15-25 mmHg. A substance extracted from Mulberry Root Bark, when injected intravenously at a dosage of 10mg/kg to rabbits, causes a significant drop in blood pressure. This effect remains even after cutting the vagus nerve or cervical vertebra. It can inhibit the contraction of isolated frog hearts and stimulate isolated rabbit intestines, both of which can be blocked by atropine, suggesting that it may be an acetylcholine-like substance. It dilates rabbit ear blood vessels and constricts frog leg blood vessels. It stimulates isolated rabbit uteri and mildly promotes secretion from rabbit submandibular glands. Intravenous or arterial administration has no effect on cat conjunctival contraction, but when directly applied to the cervical ganglia, it can inhibit the contraction of the conjunctiva caused by stimulation of the pre-ganglionic fibers. It has no effect on the back muscles of leeches alone, but when used after adding eserine, it significantly increases the tension of the leech's back muscles. The LD50 for intravenous injection in mice is 32.7mg/kg. According to Japanese reports, the extract of Mulberry Root Bark produced in China has stronger hypotensive effects and higher toxicity compared to those produced in Japan, and contains more acetylcholine-like substances.

  ③ Other Effects

Mulberry Root Bark extract has a sedative effect on mice. Preliminary evidence suggests that wounds sewn with Mulberry Root Bark thread do not require suture removal in dogs.
