The source is the whole plant of Solanum spirale, a plant in the Solanaceae family.
Plant morphology: Spiral eggplant
Subshrub. Stem erect, green, round, slightly angled on tender branches, with white lenticels. Single leaves alternate, sometimes paired on the same side of the branch, elliptic, 5-18 cm long, 2.5-8 cm wide, short pointed at the tip, entire margin, gradually narrowing and extending into a petiole at the base, 0.5-1 cm long. Umbel inflorescence on the stem, sometimes opposite the leaves; flowers white. Flower stalk about 1 cm long, calyx about 2.5 mm long, 5 shallowly lobed, corolla short, with 5 lanceolate ovate lobes; stamens 5; ovary 2-loculed. Berry spherical, 3-4 mm, yellow when ripe.
Grows in villages, roadsides, and valleys. Distributed in Yunnan, Guangxi, and other places.
Harvest in summer and autumn, cut into sections and dried.
Chemical components: The roots are rich in alkaloids. Both the root bark and wood have glycosides and alkaloids.
