[Morphology of Sea Morning Glory] Sea morning glory is a perennial climbing herb, 1-4 meters tall. The rhizome is slender and creeping, covered with fine hairs.
The stem is slender and weak, with a dry straw color and white hairs. The leaves are pinnately compound, papery, and covered with fine hairs on both sides;
The fertile leaflets are ovate-triangular, 12-20 cm long and 10-16 cm wide. The small leaflets are lanceolate with serrations or irregular divisions on the edges. The upper leaflets are sessile, pinnate, or lanceolate;
The infertile leaflets are pointed triangular, usually similar to the fertile leaflets, but sometimes a single compound leaf with broad linear leaflets, or irregularly divided into small pieces at the base.
The sporangia are born on the back of the fertile leaflets, arranged in spike-like clusters at the tips of the teeth and lobes of the 2-lobed leaflets, 2-4 mm long. The sporangia have scale-like covers, oval in shape, with a transversely oblong spore sac growing under each cover, clustered together in a ring. The sorus is mostly produced in summer and autumn.
