The Science of Proper Water Consumption and Health Maintenance: Tips to Remember

January 21, 2024

People need to eat and drink to survive. However, drinking water should also be done scientifically. Some people only drink water when they feel thirsty, which is not scientific. Over time, this can lead to "fatigue" of the thirst nerves. Research has shown that the amount of water consumed is closely related to physical health and beauty, and it also plays an important role in preventing some chronic diseases. Water is an essential substance for the skin. If the skin lacks water, it will become dry and tight. Drinking water regularly can make the skin moist, soft, and elastic.

  1. Do not drink water from the steamer, do not eat natural ice

Some canteens and households use water from the steamer to make soup, which is harmful because the steamer water contains a substance called nitrate. When boiled for a long time, nitrate turns into harmful nitrite, which causes the hemoglobin in the blood to denature and lose its ability to carry oxygen, leading to symptoms of hypoxia such as dizziness, nausea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and cyanosis of the lips. In addition, nitrite can react with gastric acid to produce nitrosamines, which are known to cause digestive tract cancer. Therefore, drinking water from the steamer is detrimental to health.

Natural ice is formed by freezing water in natural environments, and it contains bacteria and parasite eggs that can cause illness. According to tests, some natural ice in certain places contains as many as 600,000 to 700,000 bacteria in 20 drops of water, so it is advisable to avoid eating natural ice.

 2. Do not restrict water intake when dieting

When you are dieting and exercising, it is necessary to control your diet. However, some people also restrict their water intake, thinking that drinking too much water will make them gain weight, which is incorrect.

Obesity is caused by an excess of fat in the body, not an excess of water. The water content in various tissues of the body is relatively low, so drinking more water does not increase the amount of fat in the body. Therefore, water intake is not related to obesity. Whether drinking water will increase body weight depends on the situation.

Under normal circumstances, the human body has a precise mechanism for regulating water balance. The amount of water excreted each day is generally equal to the amount of water consumed, maintaining a dynamic balance. Therefore, drinking water does not truly increase body weight. However, when a person is dehydrated, a portion of the water intake is used to replenish the body's deficiency, rather than being completely eliminated. In this case, the body weight may increase, which is a normal phenomenon and essentially a restoration of body weight.

Some people restrict their water intake on a regular basis, so when they drink a little more water and their body weight increases, they mistakenly believe that drinking water causes weight gain. This is a misunderstanding. Of course, it is not recommended to drink excessive amounts of water, as it can increase the burden on the gastrointestinal tract, heart, and kidneys, and it is not beneficial to the body. Therefore, water intake should be appropriate.

Water is an important component of the human body and is crucial for maintaining good health. When you are dieting, do not restrict your water intake. Only in this way can you achieve good weight loss results and ensure your body's health.

  3. Do not drink cold beverages immediately after intense exercise

In hot weather, some people sweat excessively and have a higher body temperature after intense exercise. If they immediately consume large amounts of cold food or beverages, such as chilled soda, beer, mineral water, ice cubes, and ice cream, the blood vessels and muscles of the gastrointestinal tract will suddenly contract, disrupting the normal function of the intestines and preventing proper digestion. Therefore, it is advisable not to let children consume natural ice.

  4. Do not take medication with tea

Tea contains substances such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, which have stimulating, cardiac, diuretic, and increased gastric acid secretion effects. If you take sedative or hypnotic medications while drinking tea, it will not achieve the desired effect. Furthermore, the tannic acid in tea can react with the active ingredients of the medication and cause precipitation, affecting its efficacy.

  5. Do not take medication with fruit juice

The fruit acids in fruit juice or cool drinks can cause premature decomposition or dissolution of medications, reducing their absorption in the small intestine and lowering their effectiveness. Many medications, such as anti-rheumatic drugs, already have a certain degree of irritation to the gastric mucosa, and fruit acids can exacerbate this irritation and damage the gastric mucosa. Some antibiotics can rapidly hydrolyze in acidic fluids, reducing their effectiveness. Some medications can also react with acidic fluids to produce other harmful substances, so taking medication with fruit juice is not scientifically recommended.
