【Morphological Characteristics of Dajiugu Niu】

Dajiugu Niu, or Yangjiao Tianma, is a perennial subshrub in the family Anacardiaceae, reaching a height of about 1m. Its rhizome is stout, cylindrical, purplish-brown, and striped, with sparse soft hairs on the upper part and no hairs on the lower part.

The leaves are opposite; the petioles are 1.5-6cm long, with the upper leaves being sessile or nearly sessile; the leaf blades are heart-shaped or ovate-heart-shaped, 6-11cm long and 3-9cm wide, with the upper leaves being smaller and ovate or ovate-lanceolate in shape.

The female inflorescence is panicle-like, terminal or axillary on the upper leaf, and drooping when bearing fruit; there are 2 leaf-like large bracts, white in color, covered with soft hairs, and with ciliate margins; there are no sepals, petals, or stamens.

The fruit is supported by enlarged bracts, with a diameter of 3-4mm, covered with soft hairs, and with veins, borne on the lower part of the bracts; the bracts expand when bearing fruit, becoming broadly elliptic or nearly circular, with a diameter of 2-2.5cm, and with a reticulate venation. There is 1 seed. The flowering period is in autumn.

【Medicinal Value of Dajiugu Niu】

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Dajiugu Niu has the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, relieving cough, and alleviating pain. It is commonly used in the treatment of lung heat cough, mastitis, parotitis, furuncles, and bruises.

"National Compilation of Chinese Herbal Medicine": "Clears heat, detoxifies, relieves pain, and stops coughing. It is used to treat lung heat cough, parotitis, mastitis, and boils."

1. For lung heat cough: Take 5 qian (about 15g) of peeled Dajiugu Niu root, 2 qian (about 6g) of Xianglingcao, and 2 qian (about 6g) of Wacao. Grind them into powder and take 2 qian (about 6g) per dose, twice a day.

2. For mastitis, parotitis, furuncles, and boils: Take equal amounts of Dajiugu Niu, Chonglou, Baiji, Xiaozhanyao, and Wuxiang Xueteng. Grind them into powder and mix with honey or vinegar for external application.

【Usage of Dajiugu Niu】

1. Dajiugu Niu Powder

Take equal amounts of Dajiugu Niu, Chonglou, Baiji, Xiaozhanyao, and Wuxue Xiangteng.

Method: Grind the above ingredients into powder and mix with honey or vinegar for external application.

2. Dajiugu Niu Wine

Take 15g of Dajiugu Niu (Yangjiao Tianma) and 500g of white wine.

Method: Wash the Dajiugu Niu, put it in a wide-mouthed bottle, pour in the white wine, cover tightly, and soak for 1 month.
