Analyzing the Toxicity and Processing Methods of Snow Mountain Artemisia

    Snow Mountain Artemisia is mainly distributed in Tibet and is a commonly used Tibetan medicine. It is often used to treat joint pain caused by wind, cold, and dampness. However, due to its highly toxic nature, it is necessary to learn the proper processing methods.

 

    [Toxicity Analysis]

    Snow Mountain Artemisia is highly toxic, and the toxic reaction occurs within 0.5 to 3 hours after medication. The main symptoms include: mild drowsiness, burning sensation in the mouth, increased secretions;

    Severe symptoms include numbness, weakness, coldness, swelling, discomfort in the throat, nausea, vomiting, excessive salivation, dizziness, palpitations, restlessness, abdominal pain, and urge to defecate;

    In severe cases, there may be loss of consciousness, cold extremities, irregular heartbeat, decreased blood pressure, difficulty breathing, convulsions, and coma. Severe cases can lead to circulatory and respiratory failure, resulting in death.

    [Processing Methods]

    1. Soak Snow Mountain Artemisia in cold water, changing the water 2-3 times a day, until there is no numb or spicy sensation. Then remove it and cook it with licorice and black beans until there is no white core inside. Take it out and dry it.

    2. Soak and wash the sliced Snow Mountain Artemisia in clear water for 7 days, changing the water twice a day. Steam it in a steamer for 2-3 hours when the center is soft and translucent. Then take it out and dry it.

    3. Stir-fry the dried Snow Mountain Artemisia with hot lard until it is fully cooked, or wrap it with wet paper, place it next to charcoal fire, and bake it until cooked. Remove the paper, soak it in a child's excrement for a day and night, then take it out, rinse it clean, and dry it.

    [Medication Taboos]

    1. Snow Mountain Artemisia is highly toxic. It must be processed and the dosage must be strictly controlled before internal use. It should not be taken without processing.

    2. Pregnant women, the elderly, children, and patients with heart disease or ulcer should avoid taking it.

    3. During the medication period, avoid consuming raw and cold food, legumes, and beef and mutton.

    4. The tincture should not be taken internally.
