Yasong (Cliff Pine) is the whole grass with roots of the plant Sedum Aizoon, which belongs to the Crassulaceae family. It mainly grows on cliffs. 【Morphology of Yasong】
Yasong is an annual herbaceous plant, 5-30cm tall. The whole plant is hairless. The roots are fibrous.
The stem is solitary or tufted, branched or unbranched, with edges, and often develops adventitious roots at the nodes. The leaves are whorled, with 3-6 leaves, sessile or with a few petioles;
The leaves are elongated, spoon-shaped, or narrowly lanceolate, 8-20mm long, 2-7mm wide, with a slightly blunt or acute apex, gradually narrowing at the base, and with entire margins.
The inflorescence is cone-shaped or umbel-like, with long branches, sparse flowers, small flowers, and 3-8mm long;
The sepals are 5, narrowly triangular to ovate-lanceolate, 2-1.5mm long, with a nearly acute apex; the petals are 5, white, lanceolate-ovate, 2-3mm long, with an acute apex, and adnate at the base;
10 stamens in 2 whorls, shorter than the petals; 5 scales, wide spatulate, with notches at the apex;
5 carpels, oval, partially fused at the base, with slight milk-like protrusions on the dorsal side.
The fruit is a follicle, with the upper half inclined when mature. The seeds are ovate, brown, smooth, and 0.4mm long. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from August to September.
【Cultivation of Yasong】
After planting Yasong, don't think that there is nothing to do. On the contrary, boring days are coming. Watering at least three times a day is essential, and spraying with water mixed with rooting agent every three to five days is necessary. Remember not to spray water at noon.
After that, insecticide should be applied every ten to fifteen days. Usually, four or five times of insecticide application is sufficient. During the cultivation of Yasong, many small buds will appear. Don't be happy. Those are just adventitious buds. It is a good sign if these buds can grow into leaves.
Similarly, new buds will also appear on the upper surface of the leaves. This can only be considered as a good sign. It cannot be said that it is alive. If the management is not good, it may still die.
After Yasong has survived, do not immediately provide it with shade. Otherwise, it is easy for Yasong to be burned by the sun. Yasong should be gradually exposed to sunlight, opening the shade bit by bit.
【Application Value of Yasong】
Aged Yasong has the same color as yacai (a type of preserved vegetable) from dark gray to light gray. Yasong from cliff cavities also has a thick patina of nearly one centimeter, with lumpy and plate-like shapes.
Yasong has excellent oiliness and delicacy. The color of the wood ranges from light yellow to golden red, and extremely delicate textures can be carved, which I personally believe is not inferior to any existing root art materials.
