The leaves are opposite, lanceolate, or ovate in the lower part, with a length of 3-6 cm and a width of 1-1.5 cm. The apex is acute or slightly obtuse, and the base is sheath-like with rough edges. The sheaths often have red spots, and the sheath mouths have white, uneven eyelashes.

The bracts have stalks, are ovate-lanceolate, folded, with a length of 1.5-3 cm, gradually tapering at the tip, and not connected at the base, round or loosely heart-shaped.

They are covered with short, soft hairs or nearly hairless, with inconspicuous veins and a stalk length of 1.5-4 cm.

There are two flowers in each bract. Generally, there are 1-3 flowers in the lower part that do not bear fruit, and 1-2 flowers in the upper part that bear fruit. The sepals are membranous, lanceolate; the petals are blue, membranous, with one larger petal on a stalk; there are 3 developing stamens and 3 degenerate stamens; the ovary is oblong-ovoid, 3-celled, and the style is filiform.

The capsule is 3-celled. The seeds are black, with reticulate patterns and deep pits. The flowering period is from July to November.
