Optimal Storage Conditions for Traditional Chinese Medicine Decoction: Temperature and Duration

January 14, 2024

Currently, the most common packaging for decoction of traditional Chinese medicine is vacuum-sealed packaging. Alternatively, patients can use their own containers to hold the decoction. The recommended storage time for the decoction varies among different hospitals and pharmacies. A study was conducted to observe the deterioration of different prescriptions under different temperature conditions. The results showed that the higher the temperature, the faster the deterioration of the decoction. In seasons with higher temperatures, generally, the decoction should not be stored for more than 2 days at room temperature above 25℃. If refrigerated, it can usually be stored for 7 days. The degree of deterioration also varies among different prescriptions under the same conditions. If the decoction contains a higher content of starch, protein, sugar, etc., it will deteriorate faster.

To ensure the safety of medication, the optimal temperature for storing vacuum-sealed packaged decoction is 0℃ to 5℃, with a storage time of 7 to 14 days, but it is best not to exceed 7 days. On one hand, after the decoction is cooked, it is often kept at room temperature for half a day to a day before being refrigerated at home, which accelerates the deterioration of the decoction. On the other hand, if the decoction contains animal-based Chinese medicine such as scorpion or centipede, or high-sugar Chinese medicine such as cooked rehmannia root or astragalus root, it will also affect the storage time. If the liquid bag is swollen or the liquid has a strange odor with bubbles, it has deteriorated and should not be consumed.

If using self-provided containers to hold the decoction, it is generally not recommended to consume it overnight, even if stored in the refrigerator, it should not exceed 3 days to avoid deterioration and potential health risks.
