Identification of characteristics
Cylindrical, 3.7-7.5cm long, grayish-white or light brown on the surface, opaque. If the outer skin is not removed completely, there may be 3-4 rings and longitudinal lines, and a layer of skin can be peeled off, resembling fibers. Obvious knife marks can be seen. There is a concave or raised stem mark at the top. It is solid and not easily broken, with an uneven surface, resembling wood. Slight odor and slightly bitter taste.

Powder characteristics: Light brown.
① Numerous starch grains, single or compound. Single grains are round, helmet-shaped, or axe-shaped, a few are irregular quadrilaterals, with a diameter of 3-8-13μm. Larger starch grains occasionally have a "cross" shaped hilum, and the stratification is not obvious. Compound grains consist of 2-4 sub-grains; sub-grains are often helmet-shaped, semi-circular, or triangular.
② Calcium oxalate cluster crystals exist in the inner layer of the cork and the thin-walled cells of the cortex, with a flower-like or pointed petal shape, with a diameter of 8-26μm.
③ The vessels are reticulated, with a diameter of up to 80μm, inclined end walls, and elongated pits; fragments of vessels with large pitted pits can also be seen.
④ The wood parenchyma is in the form of chunks, with cells elongated or rectangular, and slightly thickened walls.
