【Identification of Datura metel】
Datura metel is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows to a height of 35-55cm. The whole plant contains white latex. The root is conical or cylindrical, with a diameter of 1-3cm. The outer skin is light brown, and there are no lateral roots or only a few lateral roots.
The stem is sometimes clustered or single, cylindrical, green-white, red, or green-white at the bottom with purple-red halo, unbranched or branched at the upper part. The leaves are alternate, sessile, and elliptic-lanceolate in shape. They are 2-5.8cm long and 0.7-1.9cm wide, with a short and blunt apex, a wedge-shaped base, entire margins, green on the upper surface, and gray-green on the lower surface, sometimes with a red halo.
The flowers are light yellow, with terminal or nearly terminal cymes. The terminal cymes have 5-9 pedicels arranged in an umbel shape, with 5-9 leaf-like bracts at the base, arranged in two layers. The axillary pedicels are single, with a cup-shaped inflorescence at the top or 2-4 umbrella-like branches.
The bracts are pale green-yellow, longitudinally ridged, with 5 lobes at the apex, oblong or ovate, slightly concave or entire at the apex. There are 4-5 outer glands, oblong, orange-red, or apricot yellow, with white silky hairs on the inner surface.
There are many staminate flowers, usually 1-3 stamens extending above the glands, and the anthers are divided into two lobes at the top of the filaments. The middle pistillate flower has a longer pedicel than the filaments, extending beyond the bracts. The ovary is nearly spherical, densely covered with prickles, and there are 3 styles with bifid stigmas.
The capsule is three-lobed and nearly spherical, with small wart-like projections and red prickles. The seeds are ovate and reddish-brown, about 5mm long, with a distinct white seed hilum at one end. The flowering period is in summer.
