【The Morphology of E Ma Huang】
E Ma Huang is a small shrub that grows to a height of 0.5-2m.
The branches have sparse and soft hairs. The leaf stalks have light yellow soft hairs; the stipules are lanceolate in shape; the leaves are trifoliate, with the top leaflet being broadly elliptical, measuring 4.5-8.5cm in length and 2.5-5cm in width, with a blunt tip and a hard point, a wedge-shaped base, no hairs on the upper surface, and yellow long soft hairs on the veins of the lower surface. The lateral leaflets are smaller and slightly inclined.
The inflorescence is a terminal or axillary raceme, up to 16cm in length, with numerous flowers densely packed; the bracts are lanceolate and fall off; the calyx is bell-shaped with lanceolate teeth and long hairs; the corolla is pink, with the banner petal measuring about 1cm in length, without a claw, the wing petals are as long as the banner petal, and the keel petals are shorter; the ovary is linear, and the dorsal and ventral sutures are covered with silky hairs.
The fruit is 1.5-2.5cm long, densely covered with black-brown silky hairs, with 4-7 joints, the ventral suture is constricted, and the dorsal suture is slightly undulating. It flowers from July to September and bears fruit from September to November.

The stems of E Ma Huang are cylindrical, with a diameter of about 3mm, and have longitudinal ridges on the surface. Trifoliate leaves can be seen, with the top leaflet being larger, measuring 5.5-9cm in length and 3.5-5cm in width, elliptical to inverted-ovate in shape, with a blunt or acute tip, a hard point, a wedge-shaped base, and entire margins.
