January 7, 2024

Jasmine root is a common traditional Chinese medicine, which is the root of the jasmine plant of the Oleaceae family. It has the effects of anesthesia and pain relief, and is used for trauma, toothache, headache, and insomnia. Jasmine root is also a major component of the ancient prescription "Mafeisan", which was used as an anesthetic in ancient surgery. Through research, it has been found that the use of jasmine root in the treatment of insomnia in 100 cases has achieved good results. The report is as follows.

(2) Traditional Chinese medicine symptom scoring reference (based on the "Guidelines for Clinical Research of New Drugs in Traditional Chinese Medicine").

5. Grading criteria

According to the insomnia score, the condition is classified into mild, moderate, and severe.

Mild: score < 8; Moderate: score 8-14; Severe: score >= 15.

6. General information

The 150 patients were outpatient cases at Xiyuan Hospital, divided into a treatment group of 100 cases and a control group of 50 cases using a random number table.

In the treatment group, there were 48 males and 52 females; age ranged from 29 to 65 years, with an average of 50.71 years; duration of illness ranged from 1 month to 11 years, with an average of 6.23 years; disease severity: mild in 51 cases, moderate in 44 cases, and severe in 5 cases.

In the control group, there were 24 males and 26 females; age ranged from 27 to 65 years, with an average of 51.84 years; duration of illness ranged from 1 month to 13 years, with an average of 6.71 years; disease severity: mild in 19 cases, moderate in 28 cases, and severe in 3 cases.

There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of gender, age, duration of illness, and disease severity (P>0.05).

【Treatment Methods】

In the treatment group, jasmine root oral solution (Xiyuan Hospital preparation, 10ml containing 10g of raw jasmine root) was administered, with 10ml for mild cases and 20ml for moderate to severe cases, taken before bedtime.

In the control group, diazepam tablets (Valium, Beijing Pharmaceutical Factory, 2.5mg per tablet) were administered, with 2.5mg for mild cases and 5mg for moderate to severe cases, taken before bedtime.

The clinical observation period for both groups was 7 days (1 treatment cycle). A follow-up phone call was made at 15 days to inquire about adverse reactions.

【Results】

1. Efficacy criteria

Based on the "Guidelines for Clinical Research of New Drugs in Traditional Chinese Medicine".

2. Comparison of efficacy between the two groups

In the treatment group, there were 20 cured cases, 21 significantly effective cases, 33 effective cases, and 26 ineffective cases, with a total effective rate of 74% and a recovery and significant efficacy rate of 41%.

In the control group, there were 3 cured cases, 7 significantly effective cases, 20 effective cases, and 20 ineffective cases, with a total effective rate of 60% and a recovery and significant efficacy rate of 20%. There was a significant difference in efficacy between the two groups.

3. Comparison of insomnia scores between the two groups

The insomnia scores of both groups decreased after treatment, and the difference was significant (P<0.05, P<0.01). There was a significant difference in the difference between before and after treatment between the two groups (P<0.05).

4. Comparison of wake-up conditions between the two groups

In terms of waking up feeling clear, there were 69 cases in the treatment group and 11 cases in the control group, with a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05). In terms of waking up feeling tired, there were 26 cases in the treatment group and 20 cases in the control group. There was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). In terms of waking up feeling drowsy, there were 5 cases in the treatment group and 19 cases in the control group, with a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.01).

5. Adverse reactions

All subjects underwent safety examinations before and after treatment, and no abnormalities were found. During the medication process, 3 patients in the treatment group felt discomfort in the stomach and heartburn after taking the medication, but the symptoms resolved on their own without special treatment. There were no reports of adverse reactions during the follow-up phone calls.

【Expert Discussion】

According to ancient medical records, jasmine root has sedative, calming, and analgesic effects. Modern research has reported its water solution to have anesthetic and analgesic functions, as well as the ability to inhibit the central nervous system.

This result shows that jasmine root oral solution is more effective in treating insomnia than diazepam tablets, and the wake-up condition is also better than that of diazepam tablets. This indicates that jasmine root oral solution has sedative and calming effects, and is a Chinese herbal sleep aid with good efficacy, safety, and minimal side effects, which can be widely used in clinical practice.
