【The Morphology of Sour Vine Fruit】
Sour vine fruit is a climbing shrub or vine, rarely a small shrub, growing 1-3m tall. The leaves are alternate; leaf stalks are 5-8mm long; leaf blades are tough and papery, inverted ovate or elongated ovate, 3-4cm long and 1-1.5cm wide, occasionally up to 7cm long and 2.5cm wide, with a rounded, blunt, or slightly concave apex and a wedge-shaped base. The margins are entire, and the back of the leaves often has a thin white powder. The midrib is raised, and the lateral veins are not obvious.
The inflorescence is terminal or axillary, borne on leafless branches of the previous year, 3-8mm long, with fine and soft hairs. There are 3-8 flowers, and the base has 1-2 whorls of bracts. The pedicels are about 1.5mm long, sometimes with fine and soft hairs. The small bracts are lanceolate or elongated ovate, with hairy margins, usually without glandular dots.
The flowers are tetramerous, about 2mm long. The base of the calyx is fused for about 1/2 to 1/3, and the lobes are ovate or triangular, with a sharp apex and glandular dots.
The petals are white or yellowish, separate, ovate or elongated ovate, with a rounded or blunt apex, about 2mm long, with hairy margins, and densely covered with nipple-like projections and glandular dots inside.
The stamens are degenerated in female flowers and slightly exceed the petals in male flowers. The filaments are straight, and the anthers have glandular dots on the back.
The pistil is degenerated in male flowers and slightly longer than the petals in female flowers. The ovary is bottle-shaped, the style is slender, and the stigma is flattened or almost shield-shaped. The fruit is spherical, about 5mm in diameter, with inconspicuous glandular dots. The flowering period is from December to March of the following year, and the fruiting period is from April to June.
