Exploring Different Types of Cupping Jars: From Horn-made to Vacuum

December 8, 2023

Horn-made Cupping Jar

It is made from cow horns or sheep horns. Use a saw to cut off the tip of the horn at the solid part, leaving 1-2cm as the bottom of the jar. Saw the mouth end flat and smooth. The length is about 10cm, and the diameter of the mouth is divided into three sizes: 6cm, 5cm, and 4cm. Its advantages are durability and long-lasting.

Bamboo Cupping Jar

It is made from solid and mature bamboo with a diameter of 3-5cm. Cut it into sections, leaving a node at one end and removing the node at the other end as the mouth of the jar. Polish the mouth smooth and remove the old skin around it. The jar is slightly thicker in the middle and slightly thinner at both ends, resembling a waist drum. The length is about 10cm, and the diameter of the mouth is divided into three sizes: 5cm, 4cm, and 3cm. Its advantages are lightweight and inexpensive. It is not easy to break; the disadvantages are that it is prone to dry cracking and air leakage, and it has weak adsorption force, making it difficult to observe changes in the skin.

Ceramic Cupping Jar

It is made from fired clay and shaped like a mortar. The mouth of the jar is smooth, the body is bulging, and the bottom of the mouth is slightly thinner. It is divided into three sizes: large, medium, and small. Its advantages are strong suction; the disadvantage is that it is easy to break and difficult to observe changes in the skin.

Glass Cupping Jar

Glass cupping jar is the most commonly used cupping jar in households. It is available in various medical stores. It is made of glass and is generally divided into three sizes: large, medium, and small. It is shaped like a sphere, with an open bottom and a small mouth and a large belly. Its advantages are smooth mouth, transparent texture, and the ability to observe congestion and degree of blood stasis of the skin during cupping, making it easy to assess the condition. The disadvantage is that it is easy to break and damage.

Squeeze Cupping Jar

There are two common types of squeeze cupping jars: combination type and assembly type. The combination type consists of a rubber balloon fitted over the fine end of a glass suction tube. The assembly type consists of a rubber bag and a rubber tube with a switch connected to a glass or transparent plastic jar. Its advantages are that it does not require ignition, avoids burns, is safe to use, and has a simple method. The mouth of the jar is smooth and easy to observe.

Vacuum Cupping Jar

The vacuum cupping jar is commonly made from chloramphenicol bottles. The bottom of the bottle is ground smooth to create a jar mouth, and the rubber stopper at the bottle mouth is preserved for vacuum extraction. Medical stores also sell ready-made vacuum gun cupping jars, which are made of organic glass or transparent engineering plastic, shaped like a pendulum clock, with a piston on top for easy vacuum extraction. Its advantages are that it does not require ignition, avoids burns, is safe to use, and allows for easy adjustment of negative pressure inside the jar to control suction. It is suitable for home use as a vacuum cupping jar.
